SUBSTATIONS
Substations are critical to today's distributed electrical grid. This is where voltage is stepped down from transportation to distribution. With the growing utilization of non-linear loads and DC inverted power from renewable energy, voltage regulation and harmonic problems at the substation are becoming more difficult to manage. PROXYVAR-U customized solution provides VAR and harmonic mitigation resources to help utilities manage this problem.

PV solar arrays generate DC power that must be inverted for grid applications. Electronically inverted power lacks the electromagnetic force required to do real work and supplementation from spinning reserves is required to create full-featured power. As the amount of solar energy on the grid is increased, the available spinning reserves can no longer keep up with the demand. PROXYVAR-U creates the equivalent of spinning reserves through it’s MagneticVAR technology and makes DC inverted power truly equivalent to grid power.
WIND FARMS
There are over 68,000 megawatts of wind power on the US grid. Much of this power is generated as AC power, rectified to DC and then inverted back to AC at the appropriate voltage and frequency. In addition to lacking electromagnetically backed VAR, electronically manipulated power is impacted by high levels of harmonics which can be harmful to grid equipment. PROXYVAR-U provides harmonic mitigation and voltage regulation at the grid level to manage these challenges.

MAGNETICVAR
PROXYVAR-U allows for distributed magnetic var as needed to balance power factor, thus providing the force required to keep energy flowing efficiently through the grid. This enhances the grid operator’s ability to provide clean, full-featured power at all distribution points. Traditionally VAR has been enhanced through the use of capacitor banks. Unfortunately, capacitors tend to attract harmonics and amplify their harmful effects. PROXYVAR-U’s magnetic VAR solution eliminates the problem of harmonic amplification while providing full-featured VAR enhancement.
HARMONIC MITIGATION
As non-liner loads have increased, the harmonics associated with these non-liner loads have increased and are magnified by the presence of capacitor banks. Capacitors attract harmonics and magnify their harmful effects on the system resulting in higher voltage levels, voltage irregularities, higher heat levels, and increased equipment failure along with capacitor bank failures. PROXYVAR-U harmonic mitigation technology reduces harmful harmonics to safe levels.
VOLTAGE REGULATION
Voltage regulation describes the ability of a system to provide near constant voltage over a wide range of load conditions. Utilities generally have very little monitoring equipment. Couple this with today’s complex resource management issues and you have voltages that are constantly changing. This constant fluctuation makes it difficult for utilities to make the adjustments necessary to keep voltage levels within operating limits. PROXYVAR-U dampens rapid voltage fluctuations and helps maintain voltages within specified parameters.
