Efficiency measures are characterized by installing low consumption devices controlled by high-speed electronic switches that manipulate the power signal. For example, each LED lighting fixture is competing for the same piece of the sine wave. As the number of these devices increase, that particular piece of the sine wave eventually disappears. Additionally, all of these switching devices inject harmful harmonics into your system. As the sine wave becomes less efficient, the overall benefit of high efficiency upgrades is dramatically reduced while harmonic signals create excess heat and damage your electrical and electronic equipment. Accordingly, the end result is often a smaller than expected reduction in energy costs accompanied by higher maintenance and repair costs.

Over the past decade, billions of dollars have been spent on distributed generation at the business or facility level.  PV Solar or wind installations are being added to facilities worldwide.  With this distributed generation comes additional system management challenges.  While this distributed generation creates clean KW, these systems fail to create the reactive power needed to do actual work.  These types of generation use inverters to manipulate power from DC to AC and even AC to DC then back to AC.  Today’s smart inverters attempt to create reactive power synthetically by manipulating the sine wave but don’t create the magnetic resource necessary to do actual work, this resource is still drawn from the grid.

Industrial and manufacturing loads typically utilize large amounts of power with many starts and stops. Welding equipment, for example, draws high amperage in short spurts and generates high levels of electrical noise or harmonics. Large motors create significant power factor problems and large “demand” charges. Many utilities charge penalties for low power factor, which significantly increase energy costs. Further, the harmonic signals generated by one piece of equipment can adversely affect the reliability and efficiency of other equipment while generating excess heat throughout the system. Controlling demand, improving power factor and mitigating harmonics are essential functions in controlling energy costs in these environments.

PROXYVAR allows for distributed magnetic var as needed to balance power factor, thus providing the force required to keep energy flowing efficiently through the grid. This enhances the grid operator’s ability to provide clean, full-featured power at all distribution points.  Traditionally VAR has been enhanced through the use of capacitor banks. Unfortunately, capacitors tend to attract harmonics and amplify their harmful effects.  PROXYVAR's magnetic VAR solution eliminates the problem of harmonic amplification while providing full-featured VAR enhancement.

As non-liner loads have increased, the harmonics associated with these non-liner loads have increased and are magnified by the presence of capacitor banks.  Capacitors attract harmonics and magnify their harmful effects on the system resulting in higher voltage levels, voltage irregularities, higher heat levels, and increased equipment failure along with capacitor bank failures.  PROXYVAR harmonic mitigation technology reduces harmful harmonics to safe levels.

Voltage regulation describes the ability of a system to provide near constant voltage over a wide range of load conditions.  Utilities generally have very little monitoring equipment.  Couple this with today’s complex resource management issues and you have voltages that are constantly changing. This constant fluctuation makes it difficult for utilities to make the adjustments necessary to keep voltage levels within operating limits.  PROXYVAR dampens rapid voltage fluctuations and helps maintain voltages within specified parameters.
